Bottom Drains

A bottom drain improves circulation and allows you to continually flush bottom organic debris (fish waste, leaves, etc.) form the system and direct the most polluted bottom water through the biofilter.

Without a bottom drain, debris at the bottom of your pond can create an "anaerobic" environment (areas without oxygen circulation). The "aerobic" bacteria (beneficial bacteria) that we initially try to cultivate in our ponds cannot colonize in these oxygen depleted areas. Due to the oxygen starvation, "anaerobic" varieties of bacteria flourish in the bottom of the pond. A by product of the "anaerobic" bacteria is hydrogen sulfide gas, which is very rancid smelling and very lethal to fish.

Installing 45 mil EPDM Liners

45-mil EPDM fish grade pond liners are an acceptable alternative to fiberglass ponds in situations where the available shapes and sixes of fiberglass shells are not compatible with your particular project. These liners produce an attractive, but less permanent pond than the fiberglass, but can still provide years of enjoyment.

Site:
Select a fairly level site that is not adjacent to debris dropping trees or bushes. The surrounding landscape should be graded so that all run-off water is directed away from the pond.

Sizing the Liner:
Measure the excavation at it’s widest and longest points. Measure the length, plus 2 times the depth of the pond, plus 2 feet for overlap material to determine the liner length. (Length + (2Xdepth) + 2’ = pond liner length). Measure the width, plus 2 times the depth, plus 2 feet for overlap materials to determine the liner width. (Width + (2Xdepth) + 2’ = pond liner width). Try to use a single piece of unseamed liner for your pond. If this is not possible, there are seaming and cover tapes available to properly seam and patch these liners reliably.

Excavation:
Excavate your pond to desired shape and depth. Try to get the pond walls as smooth and even as possible. Remove any protruding rocks, roots, etc. that could damage the liner. The perimeter rim of the excavation needs to be level so that the water level will hide the liner equally around the edge of the pond. It is important that the dirt is compacted and rigid around the pond edge. In loose, or unstable soil it is advisable to pour a concrete rim around the excavation to prevent rim erosion. Shelves can also be cut into the sides of the excavation to create support areas for marginal plants. These areas can also be used for stones or boulders to hide the liner material.

Installing the Liner:

  • The excavation should be padded to protect the liner. A layer of sand can be spread across the bottom of the excavation and the sides can be covered with old carpet padding. There is also a material specifically manufactured as an underliner, which is sold by the square foot.
  • Spread the liner evenly over the excavation and let it sag into the hole. Start
filling the liner with water. With your hands, smooth and fold wrinkles and creases as tight as possible, while the pond is filling.
  • Anchor the liner over the top rim with coping stone work, etc.
  • Trim off the excess visible liner when pond is full of water and rock work is
in place. Make sure trimming is done to outside of pond edging, away from
    the pond.

*Any drains or fittings need to be installed in liner prior to installing inground.
Waterscape Designs, Inc. has fittings available that are specifically engineered for this purpose.

Also use 45-mil EPDM liners in stream beds and under stone waterfalls to direct any leakage back into the pond.

Before adding fish or plants, the pond should be drained and any construction debris (cement, sand, dirt, etc.) removed. Then refill pond with fresh water and
treat for chlorine or chloramines. Waterscape Designs, Inc. carries a full line of these types of products.

Waterscape Designs, Inc. is a wholesale manufacturer and installation contracting business and sells to the public as a courtesy to do-it-yourselfers. If you need more help in designing or constructing any part of your project, we are available for consultation on a fee basis.
